Hang Gliding

Welcome to Hang Gliding Maui! At Hang Gliding Maui, we are dedicated to the preservation of the sport of Hang Gliding by offering powered hang gliding flights for the first time pilot as well as those with experience. We do this by offering interractive flight lessons using an Airborne Edge Trike. This microlight aircraft features a hang gliding wing and weight shift operation, very much like a traditional hang glider, but powered by a reliable Rotax aircraft engine. The microlight 'trike' (as this type of aircraft is known) provides the experience of hang gliding while also being capable of flying in a wider range of weather conditions. This aircraft also provides additional benefits in comfort and convenience and enables longer air time.

Hiking Polipoli

Polipoli Spring is perched 6,200 feet up the western slope of Haleakala, the world's largest dormant volcano. Haleakala, at 10,023 feet, is famous for its breathtaking rim views and hikes to the crater floor. Those who venture the nine miles up the twisting Wailpoli Road - preferably in a 4-wheel-drive vehicle - often pass through layers of clouds before arriving at the state park, which itself is often cloaked in mist. On clear days, however, the sweeping panorama of central and west Maui, Kahoolawe, Molokai and Lanai is well worth the trip. The state recreation area is situated within the Kula Forest Reserve, which has an extensive trail system. The well-marked trailhead is next to the parking lot, near a stand of Monterey cypress; the tree-lined trail offers the best view of the island. The Polipoli Loop is really a network of three trails: Haleakala Ridge, Plum Trail, and Redwood Trail. After a half mile (.75km) of meandering through groves of eucalyptus, blackwood, swamp mahogany, and hybrid cypress, you'll join the Haleakala Ridge Trail, which, about a mile (1.5km) into the trail, joins with the Plum Trail (named for the plums that ripen in June and July). It passes through massive redwoods and by an old Conservation Corps bunkhouse and a rundown cabin before joining up with the Redwood Trail, which climbs through Mexican pine, tropical ash, Port Orford cedar, and--of course--redwood.

The Polipoli Loop is an easy, 5-mile (8km) hike that takes about 3 hours; dress warmly for it.

The Skyline Trail offers an 8.5-mile hike from the Polipoli campground through Haleakala National Park to the Haleakala summit (many people park cars at each end of the trail and simply hike down to Polipoli). Hikers also walk the seven-mile Upper Waiakoa Trail, which begins at 6,000 feet and climbs 1,800 feet over rugged, rocky terrain with outstanding views. The four-mile Boundary Trail descends steeply into a eucalyptus, pine and cedar forest.
